The Pre-Prep Department
takes children from five to seven years. Emphasis on the basic
skills, which have been established in the Nursery and Reception
Department, continues and the pace of work quickens. Between
ages six and seven, we strive to ensure that the children
will be reading at least a year ahead of their chronological
age. At this stage more sophisticated language skills are
rigorously injected – essay work, poetry, junior classical
books, composition and book report. They use a growing vocabulary
with increasing fluency to express thoughts and convey meaning
to the listeners.
In Mathematics, children will
be introduced to fractions; decimal, basic understanding of
the use of graph, mathematical terms and functions. At age
6, they should know by heart number facts such as number bonds,
multiplication tables, doubles and halves. They are able to
apply their skills in mental arithmetic. These language and
maths skills are further used in the teaching of science and
the study of Modern Languages (French), Geography, History
and Art. Each class is equipped with its own computer to enhance
the Information Technology skills. The class size is between
12 and 18.
They are expected to perform
above average in each of the modules during their academic
session. Hence each module of attainment must be mastered
before moving the pupil to the final module.
